Traveling with Littles

Traveling with your little ones can be a rewarding and memorable experience, and at the same time can feel intimidating for many. From the early stages of infancy to the toddler years, these adventures can be filled with joy, bonding, and new experiences that create lasting memories. In this blog post, I’m sharing some tips I’ve learned during my parenting journey, separating tips for those babes under 1 year and over 1 year old. Whether you're a new parent or a seasoned traveler, there's always something to learn, discover, and cherish on these family adventures.

Traveling with littles 0-12 months

The first year of parenthood can be overwhelming, and the idea of traveling with an infant might seem daunting, but it's absolutely doable. Here are some tips and words of encouragement for families with babies under 12 months:

  • Plan Mindfully: Choose destinations that are baby-friendly, have essential amenities, and provide a peaceful environment as this will contribute to a lower-stress experience. Another option is to enlist the grandparents, when you can. They can be extra sets of hands and tag-team in watching the baby.

  • Pack Smart: Traveling light feels next to impossible with the amount of things little ones require. Making a checklist to ensure you don't miss anything and evaluating your suitcase is critical. Oftentimes, there are things you can get once you’re at the destination, diapers and wipes for example. There are also some amazing parent-friendly apps out there, like BabyQuip, that allow you to rent larger items at your location.

  • Embrace Flexibility: Babies have their own schedules, and it's essential to be flexible. Embrace unexpected naps, feedings, and diaper changes. Don't rush through your itinerary; instead, enjoy the journey.

  • Capture Moments: In travel there are so many moments to be documented with your little one. Take photos, document their milestones, or create a travel journal. It’s fun to revisit these memories as your child grows.

Traveling with littles over 12 months

As your child grows beyond the 12-month mark, traveling takes on a new dimension of excitement and adventure. Here's how you can make the most of this phase:

  • Foster Curiosity: Encourage your little explorer to ask questions, touch, and interact with their surroundings. It can be so fun to introduce your child to various cultures, foods, and landscapes. These experiences will expand their horizons.

  • Engage in Educational Fun: Visit family-friendly museums, wildlife parks, and new playgrounds. Learning while traveling is a fantastic way to stimulate your child's mind and ignite a love for exploration.

  • Create Traditions: Build special traditions during your trips. Whether it's certain snacks you pack for the trips, a fun family game, or trying out local foods, these traditions can make your adventures even more memorable.

Traveling with little ones at any age can be a magical experience that strengthens family bonds and creates beautiful memories. With some planning and flexibility, you can ensure that it's both enjoyable and educational. So, don't hesitate to embark on these adventures – the world is your playground, and your family's journey is a story waiting to be written. Happy travels!
